Purchasing from Sky
What is Sky TV?
Sky Digital (BSkyB), often refered to as Sky TV, is the UK's largest provider of Pay-TV channels via satellite; with almost 9 million viewers. Their service allows you, unrestricted by location, to receive a host of channels depending on your taste. Sky's service is provided by satellite, which requires the installation of a satellite dish (43cm in most cases). The dish must be mounted on the outside wall of your property and aligned to receive signal from the Astra2 satellite in orbit of the earth. Sky TV is 'digital', so is future proof with the pending 'analogue' switch off; its also a better option to freeview (through an aerial) as coverage is better and picture/sound quality is generally much improved.
How do I buy/apply for Sky TV?
The best way is via their website. You get to choose your packages, your digibox and your installation date. Buying online also saves you money, with online deals often cheaper than on the phone.
I need a digital setup, whats the minimum package option from Sky?
Sky's latest minimum offer would be a subscription to a single mix such as Variety, which not only includes some excellent entertainment channels like Sky One, but also includes all your usual free channels like BBC, ITV, C4 and Five. This package costs £16 per month. The installation will cost just £30 and the digibox, which is yours to keep, is absolutely free (retails for £119). At only £30 installation, this is significantly cheaper than you'd find anyone installing Freeview via aerial, or Virgin Media, and your channel choices are much greater.
Can anyone buy?
Providing you are 18 or over, are wanting for residential use (not commercial) and have permission of the property owner to install (namely the dish on the side of the house/flat etc) then yes, you can have Sky TV. Having poor credit history does not mean you cannot have Sky.
What payment methods do Sky Digital accept?
Sky accept payment by Visa, Mastercard or Direct Debit.
When and how much will Sky charge me? Sky will charge you exactly one month to the day of your subscription card activation. Sky charge one month in advance so you will find you first payment is double what it will be each month there after. Sky will charge you the month you've had, plus the month in advance. You can change the date your payments are taken by contacting Sky or signing up on mysky.
What if I order but change my mind? You are given a cooling off period of 14 days should you change your mind, just call Sky to discuss. This 14 day period is irrespective of whether you have started watching Sky TV or not.
Installation
What happens at installation? A pre-arranged date will be agreed between yourself and Sky for an engineer to come and install. Prior to the installation you should receive a welcome pack to Sky, containing your viewing card and terms & conditions; keep the card handy for when the engineer arrives. The engineer will bring with him your chosen digibox, as well the satellite dish and cables.
Will I need to show the engineer where to put everything? If you wish to advise the engineer where you'd ideally like the dish to be and cables to run you can do, but remember the engineer needs to mount the dish in a position where a 'line of sight' can be found. The cables will run along the outside wall of your property, if the dish needs mounting on the opposite side of the house they will either fasten the cable all the way around, or over the roof (engineers for health & safety reasons will not to into loft space).
What order will the engineer do my install? A typical order would be to mount the dish, connect up the cable(s), drill through the wall to bring the cable into the property, connect up the digibox, connect up the telephone line, activate the card.
Do I need a telephone line?
Sky's terms state that a telephone line must be connected for a minimum of 12 months. Contorary to belief, your service will operate fully without a telephone line, its only Sky's way of trying to promote box office ordering and use of interactive services. Whilst a telephone line connection will be needed by the Sky engineer to activate your card, there is nothing to stop you unplugging once they've gone. Most feel that Sky will charge or terminate a subscription if you unplug from the telephone line, sighting breach of terms; in reality however they only enforce telephone connections on Sky Multiroom setups. We do however recommend you stick within Sky's terms where possible. If you don't have a telephone line at your property at all, Sky do offer a £25 option which will avoid the need to activate the card by the usual method. This can be agreed with them at the time of the engineers visit, or before if you wish to call once ordered.
Can I ask the engineer to complete additional work?
The engineers typically have a lot of jobs in a day and don't make much money per job, so if you wish to ask them to do additional work, it would be polite to offer additional payment. As an example, to run an additional cable into another room would warrant a payment of around £10. Please remember these additional jobs would be classed as 'forgieners' and not covered by Sky themselves.
I already have a Sky dish/cables etc, why do I need to pay Sky £30 for installation?
Sky charge for the attendance of an engineer to site, even if they simply plug the digibox in and activate the card. Experience tells us that while paying the £30 seems pointless for such a small task, its actually very beneficial for a number of reasons, one being that unless you've tested the satellite setup, do you know it works? The other important reason which gets missed often is that Sky's engineer attending and checking the setup over means they are liable for the condition of the setup, as well as the maintainance should their be any faults over the course of 12 months.
I've heard some makes of digibox are better than others, can I choose?
You don't usually get a say in the manufacturer of box as this is determined by Sky TV and what the engineer has on the van. You can call Sky prior to an engineer visit though and they might be able to arrange for you. In terms of what manufacturers are better, we generally recommend Pace over the others, but all digiboxes are good and covered by the 12 month warranty, which includes engineer call-outs.
Sky+ (Sky Plus)
What is Sky+ (Sky Plus)?
Sky+ is a facility from Sky that allows you to record your favourite programmes as well as pause and rewind live TV. To record your programmes you need a Sky Plus or Sky HD Digibox as they have inbuilt hard drives for you to fill.
Is Sky+ any good Yes, its probably the best thing to happen to television in years. Having the ability to record what you want, when you want without video tapes, dvd's etc is fantastic. You can schedule recordings, set series links so it records your favourite programme each time its on, and many more features. Warning though, once you've had Sky+ is hard to live without it again!
How much does Sky+ cost? If you are a subscriber to Sky, which you will be, then absolutely nothing. Sky removed the Sky+ charge back in July 2007, it was original £10 per month.
Do I need a different satellite setup for Sky+ No, but it is recommended that you have two cable feeds from the satellite dish. If you are new to Sky and select the Sky+ or Sky HD digibox, the engineer will install the correct cabling for you. If you are upgrading to Sky Plus or Sky HD via the upgrade option, then the engineer will also attend to carry out the additional work needed.
I can only have a single cable (live in apartment/flat etc), will Sky+ work? Yes, having a single cable feed won't stop you using the basic record facility, all it will stop you doing is being able to record more than a channel at once as the seperate feeds allow seperate signals to control your viewing. With a single cable feed you can record the channel you are on. With two cable feeds you can record one channel whilst watching another, or record two channels whilst playing back something pre-recorded. Two cables is highly recommended.
Sky HD (Sky High Definition)
What is Sky HD? The revolution of TV, giving you clear, more vibrant picture, with sound quality to match. Available to anyone with a compatible 'HD Ready' television.
How much does Sky HD cost? In addition to your monthly subscription, £10 per month.
What HD channels will I get? Subscription HD channels you will receive include all entertainment HD channels like Sky One HD, Arts HD, Discovery HD etc. Also if you subscribe to Movies, you will get Sky Movies HD; and if you subscribe to Sports, you will get Sky Sports HD etc.
Do I need a different satellite setup for Sky HD? No, Sky HD runs totally off the same technology as used for standard Sky Digital. You will however need a Sky HD digibox. If you wish to utilise the Sky+ record functionality fully though, please see the appropriate question in that section.
Do I have to subscribe to Sky to get any HD channel, even BBC HD?
A subscription to Sky HD is not needed for any HD channel classed as FTA (free-to-air). That currently includes BBC HD and C4 HD, with ITV HD due in March 2008. It is advised that if you want non-subscription HD channels only, you simply purchase the HD digibox seperate from a online retailer such as SatBuyer (noting that this will not include installation). If you purchase the HD digibox from Sky, you will be subject to 12 months HD subscription at £10 per month.
General
Can I get a better deal from Sky?
As a new customer you are in the best position to gain a good deal, however Sky's recently policy changes have made this harder and more often than not the price on their website is the price you pay. They have however introduced a number of options to reduce the cost of Sky TV; these include Sky Broadband, Sky Talk and Sky Multiroom; just add them to your package to see what impact they make on the price.
What about this £75 'Pay Once' 4 month trial offer? This offer is available from Dixons or John Lewis and is £75 for a standard Sky digibox, plus installation, plus 4 mixes from the Entertainment package for 4 months. Its a great option if you'd like to try Sky out for 4 months, without being tied to a 12 month contract. All equipment is yours to keep too. More information available from their websites directly, use the links!
What happens if my digibox or satellite setup develops a fault? Within your 12 month contract should any faults occur, just give Sky a call. If they cannot resolve the fault over the phone, they will despatch an engineer to attend site. Commonly with digibox faults the engineer will simply swap the digibox out rather than try and fix. Outside of the 12 months Sky can charge you for an engineer to attend, but usually if you complain or suggest to them you'll cancel they'll send out an engineer for no charge.
